K-12 Global Outreach Program
In 2015, Dr. LeBeau, director of the International Programs and Services office, introduced a program to bring WCU international students into local classrooms to share their language and culture with local students. The goal of the program was to send international "hosts" to share information about their home countries with schools in Cullowhee in an attempt to promote cultural awareness and acceptance (read more about that here). After a successful start, the outreach program lay dormant until spring semester of 2018 when I revived it.
Over the course of my internship, I recruited and arranged for two international students to speak with 4th and 5th grade classes at Cullowhee Valley Elementary School. Both presentations were well-received by students and teachers alike, and the speakers had positive experiences. Both of the teachers have expressed a desire to have our students visit their classrooms in the fall.
In order to make the continuation of the K-12 Global Outreach Program as easy as possible for the intern who will be working for International Programs and Services this fall, I created a guide for future ISSS interns to use. I have included the guide on this page. It contains everything from an "operating manual" to photos from this spring's presentations.
